It’s a humid early August night, yet the rain bounces down through the warm breeze. He looks at the clock, it’s 9pm, he’s hungry, there’s little in the fridge and even less to do. But hey, there’s popcorn in the cupboard and a recently opened bottle of Pepsi on the side.

Seems like a movie is on the cards…”literally” he muttered to himself as nostalgic thoughts flood back to him from a time gone by when the internet connected through a modem that sounded like an angry R2D2 who has just come home to find his wife between the sheets with the Tin Man and Jonny 5 and video rental companies existed on the highstreets and his obsession with their promotional film cards began.

He wanders into the spare room filled with items still on his “must sort out” list which is now over eight years old. Despite the disorder of it all he still manages to find a bunch of those old promotional movie cards, ten of them. They look as good as the day he received them due to their Plastic Stock that would survive a nuclear fallout.

“Time to select a film to watch the old fashioned way” he thinks to himself. He calls out to his partner, his partner who would rather just watch Netflix, but they indulge him nontheless. Together they mix the cards, ensuring that a random order is reached in a manner that looks as fair as the hair on his head. Heck, they even deal the cards out so that they have 5 each, further mixing up the cards.

To make things interesting and to deploy some much needed dramatics, they take turns revealing the films that WON’T be viewed this evening, until only one single card remains. This is the film they will watch tonight.

But, of course, our protagonist is a rogue, a trickster, a conman. He knew all along which film his new partner, a recently single girl named Amber, would blindly select and couldn’t wait to see her face as the card is turned over to reveal the Pirates of the Caribbean.

No doubt this was a trick he had performed countless times over the years, proving he knew the outcome ahead of time with a prediction of his choosing, perhaps on the back of a business card in casual or formal situations, or revealing a copy of the DVD for larger audiences, maybe even wearing a sleeveless Captain Jack Sparrow t-shirt strategically hidden beneath his horse hair vest for when such a moment requires it. Who knows?

One thing is for sure though, no matter how the prediction is revealed, the Kicker is something that NO-ONE will see coming but will remember for a very VERY long time.
